Digital Marketing or online marketing is the term used for the targeted, measurable, and interactive marketing of products or services using digital technologies to reach the viewers, turn them into customers, and retain them. In digital marketing we use computer, mobile app, social media like whatsapp, facebook, Instagram, Twitter, telegram and other social media plateforms for the marketing.
So, how is digital marketing different from traditional marketing?
The traditional manner of marketing involved businesses to advertise their products or services on print media, radio and television commercials, business cards, bill boards etc. where Internet or social media websites were not employed for advertising. Traditional marketing policies had limited customer reachability and scope of driving customers’ buying behavior. As today our Youth is totally inclined to digital plateforms like facebook, twitter, Insta and whatsapp. They are not anyhow interested in traditional manner of marketing. So it is good to have digital marketing using social media and Internet as it reaches millions of people.
Types of digital marketing:
Digital marketing mainly comprises Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Social Media Optimization (SMO), and Search Engine Marketing (SEM). We can say that it can be divided into three parts SEO, SMO, and SEM. However, Email Marketing and Affiliate Marketing have also become important components of digital marketing over the past few years. So, in digital marketing, we mainly deal with the following components:
1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO): It is a process of improving the structure and content of your site and doing promotional activities to increase the traffic, and thus ranking on search engine result pages.
2. Social Media Optimization (SMO) : In Social Media Optimization, we increase traffic, and thus ranking of sites through social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+. These sites offer an online platform to interact with other people and build a social network throughout the world. Each of the social media sites has different features and offers you lots of ways to drive traffic to your website and promote your business and services.
3. Serach Engine Marketing (SEM) : SEM is a digital marketing strategy that is different from SEO and SMO, as here you have to pay the search engines like Google for the marketing of your products and services on Search Engine Result Pages. The more you pay, the more are the chances of your ads to appear on the top of the search engine listings. So, it is the practice of marketing a business through paid advertisements such as Pay per Click ads (PPC) that appear on search engine result pages above the organic results.
In SEO, you don't pay Google for traffic and clicks; rather, you get a free slot in the search results based on the quality and relevancy of your content for a given keyword search. SEM is also known by many names based on the Search Engine you are using for marketing. For example, Google ads.
4. Email Marketing : Email marketing is also one of the most profitable means of marketing, like SMO, PPC, etc. It refers to sending a commercial message to a group of people, usually potential customers using mail. In simple words, it is the use of emails for promoting products or services as well as developing and maintaining relationships with the clients.
5. Affiliate Marketing : Affiliate marketing is a type of digital marketing in which an affiliate earns a commission for marketing the products or services of a company or a seller, etc. The affiliate gets a part of the profit from each sale. So, the company compensates the third-party publishers, the affiliates, to generate traffic to company products and services. It is a relationship between three parties: Advertiser, Publisher, and Consumer. Affiliate marketers join affiliate programs that relate to their websites or blogs and have reputable promotes to promote. The affiliate shares these products with their audiences and earns a commission when a product is purchased.
Scope of Digital marketing:
As social media and Internet have become a part of everybody's life these days, digital marketing offers a very bright career option for the youth of today. Billions of people use Social media and Internet these days, so it has become a demanding career these days.
Eligibility to do a digital marketing course:
Digital marketing is a subject which is based on skills rather your education. Although the employers ask the bachlor degree in communication or Business but it is not always required. You need to pass out 10+2 from any board and from any stream to opt a digital marketing course.
Some other skills are also required to do digital marketing course, like:
